Requirements:
  • Successful completion of secondary school, Mittlere Reife or
    comparable degree
  • Interest in technology and manual work
  • Knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry
  • Reliability and sense of responsibility
  • Ability to work in a team, independent working style and commitment
Operational training content:
  • Complete mounting/breaking of molds on the injection molding machine and connection of peripherals
  • Start-up of injection molding machines incl. Parameter setting
  • Manufacturing of plastic injection molded parts according to production order
  • Operation and monitoring of injection molding machines
  • Readjustment of the spraying parameters
  • Implementation of quality controls
  • Production order documentation
  • Preparation of polymeric materials for the production of molded parts
  • Maintenance and servicing of machines and tools

The job of a process mechanic for plastics and rubber technology involves operating and monitoring machines and mixing materials according to specified recipes. Your field of work mainly includes the processing of plastics and rubber, from which you manufacture various products or semi-finished products for industrial use.

2What does a process mechanic for plastics and rubber technology do?

In the occupational field of the process mechanic for plastics and rubber technology, you will take over the control and monitoring of machines as well as the preparation of material mixtures according to specific instructions. You work primarily with plastics and rubber, from which various end products or semi-finished products are manufactured for industry.

3Where do process mechanics for plastics and rubber technology work?

Process mechanics in plastics and rubber technology often work in industrial facilities that specialize in plastics and rubber products. This includes, for example, companies that manufacture rubber articles, packaging elements, sheet material, films or various other products made of plastic.

Vocational training as a process mechanic for plastics and rubber technology extends over a period of three years and has a dual structure. This means that theoretical and practical phases alternate. At the end of the training there is an examination.

5What do you learn during the training period

At the beginning of your apprenticeship, you will gain basic knowledge about the main materials plastics and rubber, their composition, manufacturing methods and quality criteria. After that, you will be introduced to the operation of the production machines. During the practical training phase, you will be responsible for monitoring production processes, fine-tuning settings and quality assurance. You will also learn to perform measurements with specialized machines. Since the training reform in August 2023, there has been an increased focus on sustainable production methods and adapted manufacturing processes.

6Can an existing education be credited?

If you have already completed training in the area of machine and plant management with a focus on metal and plastics technology, it is possible to have this credited towards your training as a process mechanic for plastics and rubber technology.

7What further training is possible?

Technical deepening

With sufficient work experience, you will become an expert on how end products should be designed and what quality requirements they must meet. In this context, a specialization in quality management could be interesting for you.

Advanced training

If you would like to advance professionally, further training to become an industrial foreman in the field of plastics and rubber technology or a technician in the same field would be a suitable option.

Academic Continuing Education

Do you have a university entrance qualification and would like to expand your specialist knowledge even more intensively? An academic degree in plastics engineering or process engineering will enable you to achieve your career goals and establish yourself as a subject matter expert. Some universities even offer degree programs without a high school diploma!
